abduction scene.”
While they waited, the puppy paced the edge of the clearing, repeatedly turning toward Daniel.
“I know,” he murmured. “I know. We’re going to find her.”
Detective Morales arrived with other officers a few minutes later.
Daniel showed her the scattered belongings, the marks in the ground, and the photograph.
“How did you find this place?” she asked.
He pointed down.
Morales looked at the puppy.
“He brought you here?”
“He found me this morning. Wouldn’t let me leave.”
The puppy barked and hurried toward the far side of the clearing. At the trees, he stopped and looked back again.
Morales followed his gaze.
“Then we keep going.”
The officers moved through the brush with Daniel close behind their smallest guide.
The puppy’s breathing grew louder. He pushed through narrow gaps, paused to sniff, then hurried forward again.
Suddenly, he veered off the trail.
“Over here,” Daniel called.
