that Sunday dinner, my doorbell rang on a crisp Saturday afternoon.
I opened the door to find Owen standing there with Maya, who was now seven. Owen was holding a large, heavy grocery bag, and Maya was grinning from ear to ear, clutching a handwritten recipe card.
”We brought groceries, Nana,” Maya announced proudly. “Daddy and I are cooking dinner for you tonight.”
Owen looked at me, humble and clear-eyed. “We were hoping you’d let us make you dinner. Maya picked out the roast.”
I looked at my son, standing tall on his own feet, and at my sweet granddaughter who had inherited his kind eyes.
I stepped aside and opened the door wide.
”Only on one condition,” I smiled, leading them into my kitchen. “Nobody eats out of the refrigerator, and there’s a plate for everyone at the table.
