satisfy. If you’re already in the habit of poking around your room, it fits right alongside knowing why to keep the bathroom light on overnight and other small hotel-room details worth understanding.
What It Is Definitely Not
Online, the theories get colorful. It’s not a hidden microphone recording the room. It’s not a secret camera. And it is not the smoke detector, which, as noted, is its own separate unit.
One popular worry is that it’s a vapor sensor planted to catch smokers or vapers. That’s the part worth untangling. Some hotels do install dedicated vaping sensors, which are separate from the ceiling speakers used for announcements. Smoke alarms, however, can combine smoke detection with an audible alarm in a single unit, so they should not be grouped with vaping sensors as one device type. Don’t fold the two together just because both live on the ceiling.
