I thought I knew everything about my son.

I knew his favorite cartoons, the games he played after school, and the foods he refused to touch. I knew how difficult it was to get him out of bed on Monday mornings and how quickly he could turn an ordinary afternoon into a hundred questions.

“No, Mom.”

“Why not? Were you not hungry?”

He hesitated.

Then he said something that made me stop what I was doing.

“I gave it to someone.”

I looked at him.

“Someone who?”

“A boy at school.”

I assumed he had simply shared his food with a friend.

But then he added:

“He didn’t have anything to eat.”

The Boy Nobody Had Noticed

Daniel explained that a new student had joined his class a few days earlier.

The boy, whose name was Michael, rarely spoke. He usually sat alone during lunch, and whenever the other children opened their lunchboxes, he quietly looked away.

That Thursday, Daniel noticed something different.

Michael was sitting at his desk with his hands folded, pretending to be busy.

When Daniel asked why he wasn’t eating, Michael simply said he wasn’t
