hungry.
But Daniel noticed that Michael kept looking toward the other children’s food.
So he opened his lunchbox and pushed his sandwich across the desk.
“Here,” he said. “My mom made too much.”
Michael initially refused.
Daniel insisted.
Eventually, the boy accepted the sandwich.
And then, according to my son, something happened that I hadn’t expected.
Michael began crying.
Not loudly.
Just quietly, with his head lowered, as though he were embarrassed that anyone had noticed.
Daniel didn’t know what to do.
He simply sat beside him until the bell rang.
A Conversation I Wasn’t Prepared For
I listened to my son explain everything.
Then I asked the question that had been bothering me.
“Daniel, why didn’t you tell your teacher?”
He shrugged.
“I didn’t want everyone to know.”
That answer stayed with me.
My son hadn’t given away his lunch because someone told him to.
He hadn’t done it
